Point of Sale (POS) Glossary

Our glossary covers some common terms that you will see throughout Smartpay POS to make it easier for you to navigate your way through.

Customer Portal: This refers to the website a merchant can go to and make changes to download to the till. This can be accessed by a customer from anywhere that they have a browser and internet connection. Not sure what your login to your portal? Contact us and we can help.

Point of Sale: The Point of Sale (or POS) is the full system that is be installed.

Till: This is the piece of hardware where the customer creates the sale, usually a tablet or touchscreen computer.

Cash Drawer: The drawer which holds the money. This will normally be connected to a printer. The printer gives the command to the Cash Drawer to open. At times you may refer to the Cash Drawer as the till, as both are in the same area.

Server: The server is a mini PC. This will contain the database and additional software for the POS. It does not have to be in the same area as the till. Printers will generally be connected to the server via an ethernet connection.

Receipt Printer: This is the printer that is used to print the customer receipt. A receipt printer is required for the Till to open the Cash Drawer even if you are not printing receipts.

Kitchen Printer: This is a printer used to print kitchen dockets (items that need to be prepared for a customer). Even though it is called a kitchen printer this could still be in other areas. i.e. Barista. A receipt printer can also be set to be a kitchen printer. In this case it will print both receipt and kitchen docket.

K.D.S or Kitchen Display System: This is a visual system used to display items that have to be prepared for a customer. These are often used as instead of kitchen printers.

Thermal Printer: This is a printer that uses heat to create printing on thermal paper. If a customer has a hot kitchen (or puts dockets near heat lamps) the dockets from thermal printers will turn black.

Dot Matrix Printer: This is a printer normally used as a kitchen printer. Rather than using thermal printer the Dot Matrix uses a ink ribbon to create a docket. This is not affected by heat like the thermal, but does require the printer ribbon to be replaced regularly.

LAN: Local area network. This is the network within a premises. It does not necessarily have an internet connection. Usually setup with a Router (this could be a modem router).

PLU: PLU stands for Price Look Up. This a unique number for an item.

Department: This term is interchangeable with Category. The Category or Department will be the ‘container’ for particular items to keep them together. i.e. Lunch, Mains, Coffees, etc. These will usually show as buttons on the right side of the POS Till screen when making a sale.

Price: The amount being charged for a PLU or Item. Usually includes GST.

Scalable: The article can be sold by weight.

Weighted Barcode: These are special barcodes that are printed from a barcode Scale. The barcodes need to start with specific digits to shown that they are a weighted barcode (Zii terminology is a printed Barcode Label). To be recognized in the system they need to start as either 02 or 2.
