Tap & Go Mobile EFTPOS changes the way charities collect donations

|Earlier this month Smartpay and Visa helped children’s charity @Heart with their annual street appeal during Heart Appeal Week on Friday 9th August.
Currently there is no cure for Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), meaning babies born with it have to live with the condition for the rest of their lives. @Heart is the only New Zealand charity that supports children who are born with or develop heart defects. They offer over 50 free services to families around the country.
The initiative saw @Heart become the first charity in New Zealand to use mobile contactless ‘Tap & Go’ EFTPOS terminals during their annual street appeal. Smartpay donated 20 mobile EFTPOS terminals and provided training for use at collection points in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
This meant people could make a donation with their debit or credit cards not just cash, not often the case for charities that usually get the ‘sorry I don’t carry cash’ response or people don’t have time to stop and fumble through their bag for loose change.

|Kiwis have always been earlier adopters of technology and street goers where excited that they could use their contactless cards, many for the first time, to donate. @Heart collectors found that people who paid with EFTPOS tended to donate more than those donating in cash, one man donated $50!
Contactless enabled EFTPOS meant donations could be made quickly, with transaction times under 15 secs, there was no hold up for donators. @Heart is not government funded so it is important to making it easy for people to donate so @Heart can help the 2,500 families that have children born with heart defects. Not only did the mobile EFTPOS terminals allow them to take donations easier, it also allowed the street collectors to engage with donators and have a conversation with them when they used EFTPOS.

Street appeals are set to change as it is expected that more charities will follow suit and adopt the mobile EFTPOS ‘Tap & Go’ technology. The Breast Cancer Foundation has already indicated they would adopt the technology at key collection points for their annual Pink Ribbon appeal in October.
